Table tennis might look like an easy sport to some people but the truth is it needs one to be on his or her toes almost all of the time. The game of reflexes can take any side in any moment and the player is expected to keep up with the challenge too. Since it requires the body fitness and the reflexes on top of their game, you need to do a lot of things in order to stay fit enough for the game.
I have tried playing it with the intention of a friendly game which our goal was to rally and count how many transaction of shots between the two sides we could complete, that could go up to 100 exchanges. However, once you inserted the element of competition, a thriving excelling environment, things changed. Rallies were not more than 10 exchanges and the concentration, the energy expenditure and the fatigue made the game even tougher, this is what sport is.
Below are 10 tips to improve your table tennis gameplay list.
Become a part of a club
First and foremost, one thing that you need to keep in your mind is that practice makes a man perfect. If there’s no practice, no matter which sport you want to be good at, it can’t be managed. The same can be said for table tennis and you just can’t play against the wall so you need players or professional advice in order to become an expert. This thing can only be achieved and started right after you join a club.
Practice for hours
In case you want to be an expert the practice doesn’t mean just one or two games in a day and then just forgetting about it. You need to give hours into this and that too every day to learn each and every necessary detail. Even when the practice has been done and you keep on getting better on the game never quit on it because you still ned to learn a lot in this case and must also be able to get better than the best. This behaviour is very productive and makes you expert.
Use The Net
This is what you will get to hear from your coach, that is, if you have joined a club in the first place. You will hear him yelling “Go low on the net” what does it mean really? As much as you go low on the net as low does the ball travel. When it goes from one court to the other it will keep your opponent away from making a larger angle to play the shot back. Keeping the difficulty up is the play. Always remember that. Because anyone can hold the racket and throw the ball back, even the robots.
Learn to bring as much of the variables to the game as possible. Bring the serves and their modifications into the play as well. Use the combinations of topspin or backspin to keep the opponent busy and confused but reinforce your arsenal of serves with the sidespin/backspin serve that is low to the net and bounces twice on the other side of the table. Once this happens the player standing on the other side has very limited options to respond and that is exactly what makes you hit the points.
Get a better/customized racket
One sign of a pro or anyone who is getting good in the game of table tennis is that such person has his own custom made racket. These are better because you can have the racket made according to your preference and modify the handle of the racket accordingly as well. Make sure it is clean after each use. The care you give your table tennis racket will show in the thoroughness of your technique. People love it and they also notice each and every bit of it as well. Racket is like a sword in the war for you.
Now that you are too much in the game you need to get better and you need to become the best you need to get trained as much as you can and that too in different variations. Like different body movements or different ways of giving in the serves. Once you do that, that modification can help you get better and sooner or later you get automatic. Hence the body goes from one position to the other in no time at all. Eventually every single action inside the game will happen without thought.
Reinforce Starting Position
You need to learn how to stay on your toes and ready for any kind of an attack by the opponent. For that you need to get back to your ready position as quickly as possible. When you are good with your ready position you can keep the game going and that too in a quick way. Keep your knees bent slightly, and stay ready to move in any direction in anytime when it is needed. After playing the shot learn how to come back to the get ready position between shots.
Whole Body Forehead
Always remember, the game of table tennis isn’t going to be about just an arm and a couple of trick shots. You need to learn how to keep the entire body in the game simultaneously. Great forehands start with rotating your hips and shoulders backward on the backswing and then turning into the ball on your forehand. So it’s an entire game of having the manoeuvring into the control as well. You need to learn how to convert your body weight from the back foot to the front foot at the time of the need and keep the balance as you play the shot. Once again, all about practice.
Learn Angles with Racket
As said earlier, your racket is your sword and you need to learn how to spin it and how to play the shots that can only be imagined of. If they have just fired a topspin shot your way, angle your racket face down and contact the ball above its center; if it is backspin, just angle the racket face up and contact the ball below its center. One way or another, no matter which shot your opponents come up with. You must have a response for it as well.
Become A Master of Spin
Direct shots coming in a straight manner in just a moderate game are also very hard to see. Spinning the shot and keeping the opponent confused and worried of what to expect is what makes you a professional. But what makes you better is how you learn the shot that is coming at you while spinning once you do that there isn’t much left in table tennis that you need to learn it’s all about becoming a master at those spins and shots.
