(source: todayonline.com) Compliance vs Commitment. Compliance is an attitude of acceptance when a directive from an authoritative figure asks for a change in an individual’s ideas, position, activities. While commitment is a strong motivation to adopt or resist the intent of directive.I would like to identify 4 situations as an athlete on Compliance vs Commitment 1) Training everyday (Commitment) A: Well training everyday has been induced pretty much as a routine and a part of my life. I feel uncomfortabel not training for a day (okay, sunday is the only day that I would love to sit back and relax, but usually competitions are over the weekends). This is pretty much a commitment as I know the benefits of keepng to the training periodization plan. I understand that in order to improve in my sport, I need to put in the hours to refine my technique, to build on my weaknesses. Every new day is a progress from yesterday. 2) Sleeping early every night (Compiiance)A: I am neither a night owl or an early bird. i just LOVE to sleep. The benefits of sleeping early or the best sleep window is often said to be from 11pm-2am. But who sleeps before 12am? Rushing assignment deadlines, browsing social media, keeping up with the latest news. I am awake way past 12am. I know the benefits of sleeping early as often without sufficient sleep, your muscles do not recover as well etc. However, I would like to make a point that YES sleep is important, you can plan according to your schedule the next day. For me, as long as I get at least 7 hours of sleep, it will be sufficient for me in recovery, even if its from 3am-10am. Nonetheless, if you can go to bed early, thats the best! Enjoy your time in lalaland!3) Healthy eating = healthy living (Commitment)A: Ahhh, does Char Kway Teow, Black Carrot Cake, Oyster Omelette count? I love local cusines but a lot of times, they are not the most nutritious meal for an athlete. I do have them once in awhile but I try to stay away from oily food, to include more leafy vegetables on my plate coupled with fruits. I am still a fool for cakes, desserts. It is a commitment to eat clean and to stay healthy. 4) Benefits of a 24/7 athlete (Compliance) A: Being a 24/7 athlete is almost impossible, I do things like shopping and walking alot, missing meal times etc. these contribute to the effects of a tired muscle, irregular levels of energy in a day. It is very hard to keep to a 24/7 athlete lifestyle as usually, I would think about that 4 hour training session as the time I am an athlete. Outside of that, I am just a normal peasants living a normal life. But, definitely a good reminder to know that I am an athlete 24/7, keeps the motivation and the focus up. This simple exercise was to access the areas in my daily life as an athlete and the influence of compliance or commitment. From here, you are able to be aware of the approach you take in completing a task and the motivation behind, do try it out and let me know which areas in your life are a compliance or a commitment.
