The Paralympic Games is around the corner but do any of us know that our Team Singapore athletes are competing? Why is there a stark difference in the hype and energy leading up to the games? Some might say that it is a smaller scaled event compared to the Olympics which is the paramount of all games. The Paralympics hold the same prestige and the similar values of Olympism; Excellence, Friendship and Respect. How then can we get involved or be a part of the games?
Did you know? Singapore made its debut at the Seoul 1988 Paralympics and its six medals came in the past two Paralympic Games. Swimmer Yip Pin Xiu won gold and silver at Beijing 2008, and Laurentia Tan won two bronze medals in equestrian that year plus silver and bronze at London 2012. (Yes we have world champions in the Paralympics too!)
Before we can show our support for our athletes, lets get to know them and when our athletes will be competing.
Singapore has 6 Sports, 13 Athletes in 20 Events. (Full event schedule here: https://www.myactivesg.com/team-singapore)
Here are our athletes:
“My passion lies in running. The rush of adrenaline is exhilarating. Support from friends and family is important as it spurs me on. I aim to win a medal in the upcoming ASEAN Para Games, and to achieve this, I have committed more hours to my training as I believe in the saying ‘Practice makes perfect’.
“I treasure the freedom I get when I am underwater; being able to move about without obstacle is why I love swimming. Even though Singapore is a small nation, I am always very honoured to be able to represent the country and show the world what we can achieve.”
“Some people do not know I cannot swim and I am constantly carrying the phobia of falling over when the wind condition is strong. I hope that the upcoming ASEAN Para Games will raise awareness for disability sports and that the same recognition will be given to the para athletes because we too, put in as much time, effort and commitment as the able–bodied athletes.”
