Gift Your Tech Campaign
At the Gift Your Tech event, I had insights into a LIVE demonstration on data privacy where most of the files stored in our thumbdrive/ hard disk are not actually fully wiped out, in terms of the residual data. I also learnt that with a simple software such as SEAGATE detection software, it is able to pull up files that have been deleted years ago but is still in the hard disk. Interestingly, even if a hard disk goes in a fire, the files are still traceable and recovery of it is possible, amazing right? For those of you who want to dispose of your electronic devices but have qualms about your data falling in the wrong hands, fret not! The Newstead Technologies Gift Your Tech initiative gives you a peace of mind when you trade-in or e-recycle your devices with them!
I believe most of us have at least 2-3 devices that are no longer in used lying around our place. We are so used to catching up with the technological wave and we kind of hoard our devices as it has either a sentimental value or simply, we cannot let go. If you are thinking of getting rid of those 90s gadgets, this is the best time to do so.
With the Gift Your Tech initiative, the Public can send in old electronics items for trade-in and e-recycling at all Newstead stores and receive vouchers in return. Electronic items accepted are PCs, notebooks, tablets and smartphones. For items that can be traded-in i.e. in a resalable condition, Newstead has specialist who will determine the trade-in value and it will be evaluated at the store. For those that want to have a heads up of the current value of your device, you can head on to http://giftyourtech.sg/value/ to evaluate the value before heading to the Newstead stores. A cash voucher of equivalent value to the agreed trade-in amount will be given to the customer. The voucher can be used to purchase a new item and is valid for one year from the date of issue.
For your devices that do not have a resale value, Newstead Technologies will still take them in for proper disposal at e-waste collection points and give you a pamphlet of discount vouchers in exchange! It is a win-win solution for all.
A socially good cause -
20% of the trade-in value of each item received will also be donated to charity – TOUCH Community Services. For items that are non-resalable, Newstead will help to do a complete data cleansing and recycle the product. Selected participating Newstead stores are Suntec L1, Suntec L2, Marina Square, Jurong Point, NEX, Causeway Point – Asus & Lenovo, Sim Lim Square. Newstead is giving vouchers for trade-in items for this campaign. The vouchers can be combined to purchase new items at all Newstead stores. Public can easily trade in their items at the 12 Newstead stores island wide
Newstead makes it convenient to declutter old and unwanted electronic devices for a good cause (protect the environment and help the less advantaged children. Newstead also ensures data on trade in devices are thoroughly cleansed; e recycling devices are properly secured, and scrapped in legitimate e-waste collection points. Newstead Technologies helps you to easily declutter old devices, care for the environment, and help the less fortunate children.
As it is a new start to 2017, do take the opportunity to do a gadget spring clean, I recently cleaned my room and found I had like Nokia phones lying around which I used for army, and other electronics like additional tablets that would no longer be of use to me, why not give it for a good cause and get an exchange for cash vouchers to spend to upgrade your electronics. Here are some reasons about this unique campaign which is the first of its kind in Singapore:
1) Newstead embarks on Gift Your Tech campaign to raise funds for its beneficiary – Touch Community Service
2) As the leading IT retailer, Newstead wants to lead and encourage e-waste recycling in Singapore such as rewarding cash vouchers to people who trade in their old electronic items. There is also a retail island wide touchpoints in Singapore to start getting a quote for your devices and to start sharing the Gift Your Tech campaign.
3) Through the campaign, Newstead aims to educate Singaporeans on the importance of data cleansing and security
Why do I think this is a good initiative?
Firstly, aren’t we all victims of having excess at home, be it food stuff, gifts from friends, free gifts from events etc. Mostly, all of us have at least 1 technological product that is still lying around. Let’s test your knowledge, well this could also reveal your age. Has anyone heard about WALKMAN/DISCMAN? I think you have, how about something older, VCR, TAPE recorders? Not too bad. Now, how about LASER DISC? Those seem like a 9″inch pizza. Yes, the bottom line is, all of us have something we do not need, but since it’s a technology product, we might be afraid it stores certain data that cannot be erased. For example, I have 1x IPHONE3G that was lying around the longest time because I thought, that was the very first IPHONE that was commercialised. That is a memory for keep sake, however, the main reason why I still have that is because of some data that have not been wiped out and I do not have the software to do that.
This is a great initiative as one gets to bring your devices without any hassle of worrying about the data or value, as long as you bring your device down you will have a value to bring home. It is a good initiative especially for the less tech savvy individuals who would trust a professional to do it rather than selling it on carousell and realising the some data of the phone is still present.
Giving back to society is also something that is meaningful and Newstead Technologies knows that with this act of giving back to the community, it is to build an inclusive society and to be good stewards of technology, as each of the waste material can be re-cycled and used to make new products.
I had an interesting session with one of the experts. I asked in detail what it meant for data to be totally wiped out. Think of these two numbers 1 & 0. 0 would mean there is no data, 1 there is data. All our files are made up of binary numbers 1 & 0, data is stored in these 1 and to retrieve it, one needs to locate the root. I saw how with the help of a software, it could see data that was deleted a year ago. SO,if you think your data is wiped clean, think again! It can be retraced, even if the device is caught in a fire. The binary 1 & 0 is still traceable. The only way to destroy it is to change the root to 0.
This is definitely something useful for everyone to know, especially since we store so much data in our devices these days!
The campaign runs till 27th January 2017, do remember to show your support and do like the Newstead Facebook Page (https://www.facebook.com/NewsteadTechnologies/) for great promotions.
